Elgin Energy and Focus Capital Partners closed their first fundraise, securing £4.35 million. The funds will be invested in a 210 MW portfolio across multiple projects in Elgin's UK late-stage pipeline.
Elgin Energy partnered with Go Carbon Neutral to offset company emissions for the year 2020. This carbon offset programme is the first step in Elgin Energy becoming a net zero company. Furthermore, the company is committing to offsetting all carbon produced from company activity since the company was founded in 2009.
Total emissions were calculated by tracking company travel throughout the year in addition to electricity usage, waste, and company equipment. Annual emissions totalled 399 carbon tonnes. It is worth noting that 2020 will be treated as an outlier due to the reduced level of travel resulting from the Coronavirus pandemic.
Go Carbon Neutral offsets carbon through afforestation. The social enterprise brings together leading industry figures alongside climate, forestry, and biodiversity experts to deliver an ambitious strategic plan to reforest 1% of Ireland over the next 20 years. Afforestation is focused on native Irish species such as Oak, Alder, Birch & Holly to foster biodiversity.
Through this partnership, 3,300 trees have been planted on 2.5 acres of land in County Roscommon, Ireland. Planting was completed at the end of 2020 and the site in Kilultagh is now home to 53,000 trees.
Elgin Energy’s Global Managing Director, Ronan Kilduff said:
“Over the past ten years, our team has contributed to decarbonisation efforts through our projects however, carbon emissions have been created in the process. From 2020 onwards we are stepping up our efforts to combat climate change by offsetting our carbon emissions and making a positive impact on our surrounding environment.”
Tracking of company emissions will continue and the company’s journey to net zero will be shared publicly. To learn more about the work that Go Carbon Neutral are doing, please visit their website.
